All about Jinn In Islam: The Nature of Creation
The primary difference between the three intelligent creations lies in what they are made of and whether they possess free will.
| Creation | Created From | Free Will? | Main Purpose / Role |
| Angels | Pure Light (Noor) | No | Always obey Allah; execute cosmic and earthly duties. |
| Jinn | Smokeless Fire (Marij min Nar) | Yes | Worshipping Allah, though they can choose to disobey. |
| Humans | Clay/Earth (Tin) | Yes | Acting as trustees (Khalifah) on Earth; worshipping Allah. |
Jinn are responsible for what they do because they have free will like people do. They will also be judged on the Day of Judgement and go to either Heaven or Hell.
What Are the Main Types of Jinn?
The root of the Arabic word jinn is ج ن ن, which means “to hide” or “to conceal.”
The word “jinn” comes from the fact that people can’t see them.
1. Believing Jinn
- Worship Allah.
- May listen to and recite the Qur’an.
- Will enter Paradise if they remain righteous, according to the majority of scholars.
2. Disbelieving Jinn
- Reject Allah’s guidance.
- Will be judged on the Day of Judgment.
3. Shayāṭīn (Devils)
- Evil jinn who spread disbelief and temptation.
- Followers of Iblis.
Reference: Quran 6:112.
4. Iblis
- Iblis is not a fallen angel but a jinn who refused Allah’s command to prostrate to Adam.
Reference: Quran 18:50.
5. Ifrit
A powerful jinn mentioned during the story of Prophet Sulayman (Solomon). They are very strong, very big, very smart, and very independent. They may or may not believe, but they are usually shown as unruly and dangerous.
Reference: Quran 27:39.
6. Qareen
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is none among you except that a companion from the jinn has been assigned to him.”
Reference: Sahih Muslim (2814)
A qareen whispers evil suggestions, but a person remains responsible for their own choices.
7. Al-Kaboos (or Jathoom)
Kaboos means “presser” or “overlay,” whereas Jathoom means “to sit heavily upon something.” This Jinn attacks humans as they sleep or are falling asleep. An assault victim feels a huge weight on their chest, limiting their breathing and preventing them from moving or speaking, exactly like sleep paralysis. In addition to paralysis, Al-Kaboos is said to cause intense, horrific hallucinations or dreams featuring dark, shadowy entities. Once the monster loses its grip, the individual usually wakes up panting for oxygen.
8. Marid
Marid is the biggest and scariest Jinn (the word “Marid” sounds like “giant”). In general Arabian mythology, they are haughty, powerful beings linked to open water and the oceans.
9. Ghoul
Ghouls are Jinn that are thought to live in graveyards, ruins, and empty deserts. They are active at night and can change their appearance. According to folklore, they are evil spirits that lead travelers astray to hurt them.
10. Jann
Many stories talk about Jann as an open-minded Jinn who lives in the desert and can change into whirlwinds or white horses. In some ancient texts, Jann refers to the Jinn race’s peaceful ancestors.
11. Three Categories Mentioned in Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said,
“the jinn are of three classes, one which have wings and fly in the air, one which consists of snakes and dogs, and one which stay in places and travel about.”
Reference: Mishkat al-Masabih 4148
- The Winged Jinn: Those who possess wings and fly through the air.
- The Animal Shapeshifters: Those who naturally manifest or take the form of snakes, scorpions, and black dogs.
- The Nomads: A type that shifts locations, traveling and settling just like human nomadic tribes.
Where Do Jinn Live?
Authentic narrations indicate they may inhabit places such as:
- Deserts
- Mountains
- Valleys
- Ruins
- Bathrooms
- Garbage dumps
- Markets
- Some abandoned places
- The wilderness
This does not mean every such place contains jinn.
What Is the Difference Between Jinn and Shayṭān?
| Jinn | Shayṭān |
|---|---|
| A created race with free will | A rebellious, evil jinn or evil human |
| Can be Muslim or non-Muslim | Always rebellious |
| Some worship Allah | They seek to mislead people |
Powers of Jinn
- They may observe behavior, hear speech, and make guesses, but knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah alone.
- Jinn can change into different types of bodies, such as people, animals (like black dogs or snakes), or shadows in the room.
- Jinn cannot know the future.
- Jinn causes nightmares. The Prophet ﷺ said: “A good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Shayṭān.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6986, Sahih Muslim 2261)
- Jinn can possess Humans.
- Like humans, they are mortal. They will also be resurrected and judged.
- Jin can see humans, but normally, humans cannot see jinn in their true form.
- Jinn can marry and have children.
- Jinn can eat or drink. The Prophet ﷺ said: Bones and animal droppings can be food for believing jinn, so Muslims shouldn’t use them to clean themselves after going to the toilet. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3860 and Sahih Muslim 450a).
- Like humans, there are Muslims, Christians, Jews, Idol worshippers, Atheists, Other disbelievers. The Qur’an confirms that not all jinn are believers (Quran 72:11–15)
How They Interact with Our World
Jinn mostly live their own lives in groups. They get married, have kids, and die. They do, however, sometimes cross over into our world:
- Whisperings (Waswas): The main way Shayatin hurt people is not physically, but mentally and spiritually. To lead people astray, they whisper doubts, anger, and temptations into their minds.
- The Islamic tradition recognises that evil Jinn can sometimes take over humans and do harm. This is usually connected to magic (Sihr) or how easily people can be hurt.
- The Qareen: Each person is given a Jinn companion known as a Qareen. This Jinn is always tempting the person, but the Prophet Muhammad said that his own Qareen believed in Islam and only pushed good things.
Protection Against Sleep Attacks
- When you do wudu, which means “bath,” you should always be physically and spiritually clean before going to sleep.
- Clean Your Bed: While you say three times “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah), clean your bed and sheets. As the Prophet ⷺ taught, “None of you know what sat on his bed after he got up.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6320).
- Say Ayat al-Kursi, also known as “The Throne Verse” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255). This is the Qur’an’s greatest defense. If you say this verse before going to sleep, an authentic Hadith says that “…there will remain over you a guardian from Allah, and no devil (Shaytan) will approach you until morning.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3275).
- Say the “Three Quls“: cup your hands together, say Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, blow into your hands, and then wipe your whole body with them. Do this three times over.
- If you want to be alert, lie on your right side with your right hand under your right cheek. This keeps your sleep light and healthy and keeps your brain from getting too heavy, which makes you more likely to be hit by the chest-crushing Kaboos.
