30 Secrets of the Universe | Science Is Still Uncertain

Have you ever looked up at the stars at night and wondered about the secret of the universe and thought about how everything began? You’re not by yourself.

Even the smartest scientists in the world are still not sure how to explain the mysteries of the universe. This brings up another important question for Muslims: What does the Qur’an say about the universe?

We’ll look at the top 10 unexplained secrets of the universe in this article.

Can Science Ever Explain These Secrets of the Universe?

Scientists work every day to uncover the secrets of the universe. New discoveries bring us closer to the truth. Yet many mysteries remain unsolved.

Powerful telescopes and space missions continue to explore the cosmos. Future research may explain some secrets of the universe. Others may remain unknown for centuries.

The secrets of the universe inspire curiosity and scientific discovery. They remind us that there is still much to learn about our amazing universe.

Secret 1: How Did the Universe Begin?

How Did the Universe Begin?

The current standard model of cosmology says that the universe started about 13.8 billion years ago as a hot, dense state that quickly grew. People often call this event “the Big Bang.”
The Big Bang doesn’t talk about a blast that sent matter into space. Instead, it talks about how space is expanding.

A lot of important questions are still unanswered:

  • What made the Big Bang happen?
  • Was there a “before,” or did the universe start time?
  • Why did the world start out with so little chaos?

Qur’anic Reflection:

Allah says:

“Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass, then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?”
(Qur’an 21:30)

A lot of Muslims think that this text fits with the idea that the world was created. Others say that the verse’s main goal is to give theological advice, not a scientific one.

Secret 2: What Existed Before the Big Bang?

What Existed Before the Big Bang?

Surprisingly, no one knows. In fact, some physicists say the question may not make sense if time started with the Big Bang.

A number of theories have been put forward:

  • The universe we can see came after cosmic inflation.
  • Cyclic universe models say that the world keeps growing and shrinking.
  • Quantum cosmology says that the universe is made up of quantum processes.
  • A state of infinite inflation in which many “bubble universes” can form.

These ideas have not been proven to be true.

Qur’anic Reflection:

Allah says:

“All it takes, when He wills something ˹to be˺, is simply to say to it: “Be!” And it is!”
(Qur’an 36:82)

For Muslims, this verse emphasizes how powerful Allah is in making things. It is not offered as a scientific way to explain how the universe came to be.

Secret 3: Reality of Dark Matter?

It’s impossible for visible matter alone to explain how fast stars move around the centers of galaxies. Something that can’t be seen seems to add to the heaviness.
Scientists call this part that is missing “dark matter.” It includes Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), Axions, Sterile neutrinos and other yet-undiscovered particles. Big projects like XENONnT, LZ, and PandaX are still looking for dark matter.

Researchers think it exists because:

  • The way worlds spin.
  • The way that galaxy clusters move.
  • Light bends around an invisible mass because of gravitational lensing.
  • Patterns in the background of cosmic microwaves.

Secret 4: Presence of Dark Energy?

It’s possible that dark energy is even stranger than dark matter.
Astronomers studying faraway supernovae found in 1998 that the expansion of the universe is speeding up, not slowing down as many people thought it would. They gave the unknown cause the name “dark energy.”

The goal of space projects like Euclid and the upcoming observations from the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is to map billions of galaxies and learn more about how the expansion of the universe has changed over time.

Dark energy seems to make up about 68% of all the energy in the world, but no one knows what it is.

Researchers are still looking into whether it is:

  • Einstein’s constant of cosmology.
  • Being a field that changes over time.
  • Proof that what we think we know about gravity is not full.

Secret 5: Black Holes—What Happens Inside?

One of the most interesting things in the universe is a black hole.
They are made when very heavy stars fall apart due to their own gravity or other astrophysical processes. This makes areas with so much gravity that not even light can get out past the event horizon.

Observations have shown that:

  • There are black holes all over the world.
  • In the middle of many galaxies, there are supermassive black holes.
  • When black holes merge, gravitational waves are sent out into space and can be picked up by equipment like LIGO and Virgo.
  • The Event Horizon Telescope took the first picture of a black hole’s shadow in 2019. In 2022, it took a picture of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way.

Scientists continue to investigate:

  • What happens to information that falls into a black hole?
  • Is the singularity a real physical object or a sign that current theories break down?
  • Can quantum gravity resolve these puzzles?

These questions lie at the frontier of modern physics.

Secret 6: Wormholes – Can the Universe Have Cosmic Shortcuts?

Consider folding a piece of paper so that two far-off spots come into contact. You go directly through the fold rather than across the page. A related idea in theoretical physics is a wormhole. It is a fictitious tunnel that links two far-off places in space, or possibly even two different eras.

No wormhole has ever been seen.
If wormholes exist, scientists think they might need rare, exotic stuff to stay open.

Theoretically, stable wormholes could permit:

  • quicker travel over vast cosmic distances.
  • novel understandings of gravity.
  • a deeper comprehension of space-time.

Qur’anic Reflection

The Qur’an does not mention wormholes. However, it repeatedly reminds believers that Allah’s creation extends beyond human knowledge.

“They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about the spirit. Say, “Its nature is known only to my Lord, and you ˹O humanity˺ have been given but little knowledge. ””
(Qur’an 17:85)

Secret 7: White Holes – The Opposite of Black Holes?

If black holes trap everything, could there be objects that only release matter and energy?

A white hole is a hypothetical solution to Einstein’s equations where matter and energy can emerge but nothing can enter.
White holes, in contrast to black holes, have not been discovered.

Secret 8: Time?

Since we encounter time on a daily basis, it seems effortless.

According to Einstein, space and time are connected to form space-time. Time can be slowed by gravity, and objects traveling at extremely high speeds perceive time differently than those at rest.

Scientists still debate:

  • Why does time only travel in one direction?
  • Can deeper physical laws give rise to time?
  • Does time originate from more fundamental processes, or is it fundamental?

Experiments with atomic clocks have repeatedly confirmed time dilation, a prediction of Einstein’s theory of relativity. For accurate navigation, GPS satellites have to take these factors into account.

Qur’anic Reflection

Allah says in the Quran:

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِٱلْعَذَابِ وَلَن يُخْلِفَ ٱللَّهُ وَعْدَهُۥ ۚ وَإِنَّ يَوْمًا عِندَ رَبِّكَ كَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍۢ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ

“They challenge you ˹O Prophet˺ to hasten the torment. And Allah will never fail in His promise. But a day with your Lord is indeed like a thousand years by your counting.”
(Qur’an 22:47)

˹through which˺ the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit will ascend to Him on a Day fifty thousand years in length. (Qur’an 70:4)

Secret 9: Are We Alone in the Universe?

This question may be the most captivating to people. Planets are common throughout the Milky Way, according to modern astronomy.
Many of the thousands of known exoplanets are located in the “habitable zone,” where temperatures may support liquid water under the correct circumstances.

No solid proof of extraterrestrial life has been discovered despite decades of research.
That just indicates that the search is still ongoing, not that life is nonexistent.

Qur’anic Reflection

The Qur’an states:

وَمِنْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ خَلْقُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَثَّ فِيهِمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍۢ ۚ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ جَمْعِهِمْ إِذَا يَشَآءُ قَدِيرٌۭ

“And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and all living beings He dispersed throughout both. And He is Most Capable of bringing all together whenever He wills.”
(Qur’an 42:29)

According to some scholars, this text leaves open the idea that Allah may have made life apart from Earth. Some people see things in a different way. It’s not clear from the verse that there are intelligent societies beyond Earth.
It is best not to make promises that go beyond what science or the Qur’an clearly shows.

Secret 10: The Fermi Paradox – If Intelligent Civilizations Exist, Where Is Everyone?

There are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe, and each one has a vast number of stars.
In light of these enormous figures, many scientists wonder:
Why haven’t we discovered concrete proof of intelligent civilizations if they are widespread? This puzzle is known as the Fermi Paradox.
Possible Explanation:

  • Intelligent life is incredibly uncommon.
  • Before going into space, civilizations can wipe themselves out.
  • Advanced societies might decide against communicating.
  • Over vast cosmic distances, signals deteriorate.
  • Humanity hasn’t looked far enough.

Initiatives like the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) keep an eye out for artificial radio waves and other possible technological indicators in the sky.
While interesting signals have been found from time to time, none have been confirmed to be from extraterrestrial intelligence.

Conclusion:

Science is a journey rather than a collection of final answers. Every major discovery answers one question while raising several more. Advances in telescopes, satellites, particle physics, and mathematics have transformed our understanding of the cosmos. At the same time, they remind us how much remains unknown.
