FIFA World Cup Reality in Islam
The FIFA World Cup Reality in Islam is that football is permissible (halal) if it remains within the limits set by Islam. However, many activities associated with the tournament may become sinful.
Muslims should avoid gambling, missing obligatory prayers, inappropriate behavior, and excessive attachment to entertainment while maintaining balance between recreation and their duties to Allah.
Islam judges actions according to their effects and intentions.
Allah says:
“O believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. Should you disagree on anything, then refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you ˹truly˺ believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is the best and fairest resolution.”
(Qur’an 4:59)
Every Muslim should ask whether watching or participating in the World Cup brings them closer to Allah or distracts them from their religious duties.
Is Playing Football Halal in Islam?
Playing football is generally permissible if:
- It does not cause someone to miss the five daily prayers.
- It does not involve gambling.
- Players dress modestly according to Islamic guidelines.
- It does not include abusive language or violence.
- It does not harm the body unnecessarily.
- It doesn’t turn into an addiction that takes the place of religious duties.
Physical exercise is encouraged in Islam because it strengthens the body.
The Prophet Muhammad ï·º said:
“A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don’t say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your” if” opens the (gate) for the Satan.”
(Sahih Muslim 2664)
Is Watching the FIFA World Cup Haram?
The FIFA World Cup Reality in Islam is that watching football is not automatically haram.
It becomes sinful when it leads to:
- Missing obligatory prayers.
- Neglecting family responsibilities.
- Gambling or sports betting.
- Listening to inappropriate entertainment.
- Hatred, fighting, or abusive behavior.
- Wasting excessive time.
If these sins are avoided, many scholars consider watching football to be permissible entertainment.
Gambling During the FIFA World Cup
One of the biggest Islamic concerns during the World Cup is betting.
Allah says:
“O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idols, and drawing lots for decisions1 are all evil of Satan’s handiwork. So shun them so you may be successful.”
(Qur’an 5:90)
Sports betting, prediction games involving money, and gambling are clearly haram in Islam.
Missing Salah Because of Football
Some people delay or skip Salah to watch matches.
Allah says:
“When the prayers are over, remember Allah—whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down. But when you are secure, establish regular prayers. Indeed, performing prayers is a duty on the believers at the appointed times.”
(Qur’an 4:103)
No football match is more important than the obligation of Salah.
Supporting National Teams in Islam
Cheering for a country’s football team is generally permissible.
However, Islam forbids:
- Racism
- National arrogance
- Insulting other nations
- Hatred between people

Sunan Abi Dawud 5121
A Muslim should support teams respectfully without creating hostility.
Wasting Too Much Time
The FIFA World Cup Reality in Islam also reminds Muslims to value their time.
The Prophet ï·º said:
“There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time.””
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6412)
Watching a few matches for recreation may be acceptable, but spending entire days watching football while neglecting worship, work, or family is not wise.

Observe the fast sometimes and also leave them (the fast) at other times; stand up for the prayer at night and also sleep at night. Your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you and your wife has a right over you.”
